Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, ETH Zürich Zürich, Switzerland	Open End	Doctoral and postdoctoral research fellowships are available at the ETH Zürich with Professors Richard Knochenmuss and Renato Zenobi to study ionization mechanisms in Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption-Ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry. The physical/chemical processes by which MALDI matrices are able to soft-ionize a wide variety of analytes remain largely unknown. A molecular beam / laser spectroscopy project has been started to fill this gap. Spectroscopy of free matrix molecules and clusters is used to understand their excited state properties. Of interest are multiphoton ionization pathways, excited state proton transfer reactions, electron transfer reactions, energy pooling processes, fragmentation channels, and ion-state proton transfer. The goal is to selectively generate MALDI-like ions in model clusters, then show that these same processes take place in the MALDI desorption plume. The molecular beam instrument(85k, 2nd window) includes two nanosecond dye lasers for selective excitation-ionization experiments, a TOF mass spectrometer, and fluorescence detection system with a CCD camera. Investigations in the MALDI plume can be carried out with the same lasers in the same or a neighboring instrument. The candidate would ideally have experience in at least one of the following: photochemistry of small aromatics, molecular beams, or laser spectroscopy.
